Linz at the turn of the century was a town of 50,000 people which -despite urban status symbols such as an opera house and an electric tramway - was still characterised by an atmosphere of sleepy provinciality.
Adolf Hitler first came to Linz at the age of 5 when his father, a customs official, was transferred to a new posting there in 1894.
