The Following: A Transmedia Storytelling Experience

“You’re developing a taste for it – the violating, the voyeurism… it’s definitely you.”

“You take it away… to show them what they had.”

The Following is the 1998 debut film from acclaimed director Christopher Nolan. A young writer begins to follow strangers in hopes of becoming enlightened, when he stumbles upon a thief. The thief sparks a relationship with the young writer and begins to show him what it means to really follow people. Our project will continue this story and create a non-linear narrative surrounding the young writer and the thief, Cobb, as he teaches him how he follows people himself.

Our project will contain originally shot footage, using the Canon 7D, and will maintain the black and white aesthetic created in the film. We will embed our newly shot scenes into GPS Cinema and engage our viewer when they travel to various locations, revealing more about this complex and interesting character known only as Cobb.

Our GPS points although seeming random, are meant to perpetuate curiosity about the following process which would in turn lead to our transmedia elements.

To build interest in the narrative, we will engage audiences using a social media campaign. We will us such social networks as Facebook and Wordpress. Our goal is to create an interface where we the creators can in fact engage with the audience and learn what and how they feel about Cobb, impacting the choices and events that occur within the narrative.
