Another question for class…
I am interested in the idea of agency as it applies to video games. Although I strongly advocate for the idea of using games as pedagogical tools, I am somewhat sceptical of some of the arguments made in our recent readings (both this week’s and last’s) that posit video games as potentially having social and/or health benefits. My impression is that they remain essentially solipsistic and passive, particularly when considering (and I’m going to sound like a typical parent here) the time spent playing games could be spent doing ‘real things’ in the ‘real world’ with ‘real people’ (perhaps even enacting ‘real’ change). I’m being a bit of a devil’s advocate, but I’m curious as to what people have to say about this…
