By: Akua, Doesjka, and Victoria Group Presentation Project Proposal Paragraph For our group presentation, we have decided to do a more thematic project focusing on dance and the cultural preservation through dance within Toronto. We have done some research on dance companies we find particularly interesting and are culturally diverse. One dance company amongst our selection is The Toronto Chinese Dance Company. This company, founded by Artistic Director Yan Lam in 1996, proposed to keep the ancient arts of China alive in the new land. While incorporating new choreography, The Toronto Chinese Dance Company maintains the classics and traditions of Chinese dance. Other companies, such as Arte Flamenco Spanish Dance and the Caribbean Dance Theatre also have goals to keep their cultural dance traditions alive in the diverse city of Toronto. These three companies are all using dance to express their culture. We will interview the directors of the companies, watch some performances, and perhaps even participate in a few lessons. How their culture blends in with the contemporary Toronto society in which we live, and how they maintain their culture and tradition in this society are two of our most important questions. Whether they use dancing as a way of identifying themselves in the multicultural society or to maintain the diversity is also relevant. In other words, is their dance more socially or personally significant? www.chinesedance.com www.arteflamenco.com www.diversitynow.ca |
