Justice Zinn was born in Oxford County, Ontario. He was educated at Carleton University (B.A. 1973 and M.A. (Philosophy) 1976) and the University of Ottawa (LL.B. 1979). Following his call to the Ontario Bar in 1981 he became an Associate and later a partner with Gowling & Henderson in Ottawa (1981-1993). He left to establish and manage his own firm (1993-2001), then joined Ogilvy Renault LLP. as a partner and in 2006 was appointed a Senior Partner (2001-2008). Justice Zinn’s legal practice focused on human rights, labour and employment, access and privacy law issues. He appeared as counsel before the Supreme Court of Canada, Federal Courts, Ontario Court of Appeal, Ontario Superior Court, Bermuda Court of Appeal, and numerous federal and provincial boards and tribunals. He is the author of The Law of Human Rights in Canada: Practice and Procedure (Canada Law Book, 1996) and numerous articles. Justice Zinn was appointed Judge of the Federal Court and ex officio member of the Federal Court of Appeal on February 20, 2008, and was appointed a Judge of the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada on November 20, 2008.
