Welcome
Welcome to the GIScience Study Group of the Canadian Association of Geographers. We are a subset of CAG members with interests touching various aspects of GIScience in Canada. We aim to foster a culture of collaboration, student training, and academic excellence and provide substantial support to our student members through travel grants and awards.
Goal
The GIS-SIG Study Group was formed around the interests in GIS, geomatics and related spatial
technologies. Members are interested in the following:
- Conducting GIScience and GIS applications research
- Designing model curricula and educational tools with Canadian content
- Advocating for spatial data that is free or at-the-cost-of-distribution
- Designing innovative techniques for collecting and disseminating spatial data
- Facilitating education in GIS, geomatics and related technologies
- Fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between geographers and others interested in GIS
2017 Annual Business Meeting
The GIScience Study Group hosted 5 special sessions at CAG this week and held an enjoyable annual business meeting and luncheon. Thanks to all who attended; we had a wonderful brainstorming session, let's get some of those ideas into action.
I remind everyone that next year, CAG will be held jointly with the International Geographical Union (IGU) in Quebec City; mark your calendars and plan to attend!
As CAG and GIScience Study Group members, we are entitled to free membership in the IGU Geographical Info. Science Commission (C12.12); sign up today for all of those benefits for next year!
Sincerely,
Tarmo Remmel

2017 CAG Special Session
The GIScience Study Group is making a call for presentations to be considered for inclusion in their special session "Advancements in GIScience in Geography" at this year's CAG meeting at York University (http://cag-acg2017.ca/) May 29 - June 2, 2017. Final abstracts are due February 24, but prior to submitting your abstract to the conference, please send them to remmelt@yorku.ca for pre-screening for this special session. We will operate on a first-come-first-served basis. Depending on need, we may add a second session.
Summary:
Threaded throughout the numerous sub-disciplines of geography are methodological, technical, and logical tools and techniques that support, facilitate, and advance geographic thinking and investigation. Broadly and collectively these areas of development and investigation are labelled as Geographic Information Science (GIScience). This special session intends to showcase the work by GIScience Study Group members (http://www.yorku.ca/gis_sig/) and more inclusively, of all individuals contributing directly or indirectly to the advancement of GIScience (either theoretically on in an applied sense). GIScience is an integrative discipline that develops tools, technologies, and solutions for answering complex questions having geographical roots. Using GIS, remote sensing, spatial statistics, and quantitative approaches, GIScience transcends traditional sub-disciplinary boundaries by bringing rigorous methods to integrated, scalable, and timely research questions in multiple research areas.
Looking forward to seeing many of you in Toronto, and at York in a few short months.
Sincerely,
Tarmo Remmel

Logo Design Contest
Dear GIScience Study Group,
I am pleased to announce that in an effort to increase the visibility and awareness of our Study Group, we are hosting a graphic logo design contest. We're looking for a logo that works equally well in print and digital media, identifies with the culture of GIScience, is scalable, and adaptable. We solicit your designs in a variety of vector (.ai, .ps, .eps, .emf) or raster formats (.tiff, .png, .jpg, .gif) by midnight, 4 May 2014 (although vector forms are preferred for scalability). Once all of the submissions are received, the executive will produce a short-list and present it to the membership for voting. We hope to have a design in place for this year's CAG meeting at Brock University at the end of May. All submissions should be sent to Tarmo Remmel (remmelt AT yorku.ca). The winner of the contest will be awarded with a free year of membership in the Study Group and a $50 award (not to mention fame and bragging rights). This contest is open to all current GIScience Study Group members. We ask that you consider some of the recommendations at the following site before producing your design.
http://www.creativebloq.com/graphic-design/pro-guide-logo-design-21221We look forward to seeing your creative submissions. We will accept 3 designs from any one individual. Having multiple versions (colour, greyscale, vector, raster) of any one design will count as a single submission.
Sincerely,
Tarmo Remmel

CAG 2014, Special GIScience Session: Call for Papers
Special Session: Applications and developments in GIScience
Session Organizer: Tarmo K. Remmel, Department of Geography, York University
Session Sponsor: GIScience Study Group
Description:
I, on behalf of GIScience Study Group invite you to submit an abstract to a special session on "Applications and Developments in GIScience" that will be held during this year's Canadian Association of Geographers meeting, hosted simultaneously with Congress and by Brock University (26-30 May 2014).
This session is intended to showcase the work by GIScience Study Group (http://www.yorku.ca/gis_sig/) members and of those individuals conducting work that relates to GIScience. This session will consider papers from both the applied and theoretical sides of the discipline. GIScience is an integrative discipline that develops (or seeks) tools, technologies, and solutions for complex questions with geographical roots. Using GIS, remote sensing, spatial statistics, and quantitative approaches, GIScience transcends traditional sub-disciplinary boundaries by bringing rigorous methods to integrated, scalable, and timely research questions in multiple research areas.
Please send abstracts of no more than 200 words, plus title and author details to Tarmo Remmel (remmelt AT yorku.ca) by March 10, 2014. Abstracts should summarize the purpose, methods, and conclusions of the research.
