Design Document/Next Steps
You have all the freedom you could possibly want in your design -- the important thing is to make the game that you want and then to think about what it is you think people will "learn" from it, how you will "teach" various elements and then adjust the game if you aren't happy with what users will "learn"or how you are "teaching" particular elements.
At this early stage you need to consider the following questions:
- What is the over arching concept of your game?
- What is the background and/or story/narrative element to your game?
- What is the goal of the game?
- How does the game narrative tie in to game generally?
- What are the various components of the game?i.e. navigation, story, puzzle, fighting, quests, etc.
- What is fun about it?
- Who will play it? (i.e. who is your audience)
- What will it "look like"? What environment will you choose?
- What tools will you need to make it? i.e. Flash, html, other? an existing game engine?
- What will users learn? how will you "teach" them?
