AS/SOSI3830 Sociology of Urban Life is a third year course in the Sociology Department, York University. Because it is important for advanced urban sociology students to be sensitive to and knowledgeable of the many cultures that comprise the city, this course is designed to increase that multicultural sensitivity and knowledge through field work and participant observation study. It is hoped that thereby that our graduates will be more aware of social issues impacting our diverse society, and more committed and able to engage effectively in their own communities now and in the future.
To facilitate this important learning, students are asked to become personally acquainted with people in select communities like your own. Though this hands on engagement, each student is expected to learn more about the experience of migration, the understanding of family life, its celebrations and rituals, and other patterns of social and political life in the city.
By the end of the course (March 19), each student will be required to submit to the instructor a full written report of his or her learning. If you require further information please contact Dr. Lorne Foster, phone 416-226-9054.
The student who has given you this form is requesting your permission to learn from you what you would be willing to share of your own culture, experience, and community life. No student is allowed to reveal information you do not wish revealed, and you are free at any time to stop meeting with the student.
