Testing Pointing Device Performance and User Assessment with the ISO 9241, Part 9 Standard

Note: The paper above contains an error in the calcuation of Fitts' throughput for the multi-direction task. The error is in Equation 6 for the calculation of the standard deviation in selection coordinates. The correct calculation takes a one-dimensional view of the data along the task axis. This is consistent with the inherently one-dimensional nature of Fitts' law and also with the requirement in ISO 9241-9 (now ISO 9241-411) that "sx is the standard deviation of the selection coordinates in the direction where movement proceeds (x-axis in a horizontal tapping task)".
