Physics for Scientists and Engineers, 2nd ed., Randall D. Knight. with Mastering Physics, softcover volumes 1,3,4; not the entire one-volume hardcover.

ISBN 0131361732

The required 1010 package [it is in the bookstore as of mid-August, for about $150] contains thin softcover volumes 1,3,4, workbooks, access code for Mastering Physics and a $20 rebate coupon for clickers.

Poor but permissible alternatives: (A) used 1st edition, buy MasteringPhysics separately ($30), no clicker coupon [any savings? I doubt it]. (B) Full hardcover text, 2nd ed. (used in 1410 summer, so it is on the shelves, includes parts 2,5 missing from our package, no clicker rebate, but it does have the MP access code). No other textbook substitutions. MasteringPhysics will account for 10% of the course grade. Go for alternatives (A,B) ONLY if for some reason you own the hardcover, and cannot return it. The softcover (split) edition will make it possible to do the readings away from home (the hardcover is impossible to carry). If you are repeating this course over from last year, you do not need to re-purchase MasteringPhysics, the code is valid for 2 years, as long as you signed out of previous MP enrollments.

Also required

Laboratory Manual (available for cash $10 in Physics/Astronomy office 125 PSE in September; office is open 10-12 and 1-5). The labs will start in the week of Monday, September 15, and are located in Lumbers on the 3rd floor.

Clickers. More info to come, will be available in class 2nd day of lectures (Friday), pre-registration on the web; New clickers: ($50) will be re-purchased by York for $20 at end of academic year, so with the rebate this is a $10 cost; Used clickers ($35) will not be re-purchased by York, but you can use them in other courses or sell privately, (de-facto cost $15 when rebate is obtained).

Pre-Lab Exercises for each experiment from the Laboratory Manual must be completed BEFORE attending the Lab session! Failure to do so results in a 20% penalty (loss of 2/10 marks). Pre-lab tutorials will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:30-2:30 in the labs. First meeting time: Thursday, Sept 11. The webpage link for the Laboratories is Lab Webpages.

Interesting for students of PHAS, COSC, CHEM, ENG:

Maple 12 software (special student deal for PHYS1010 students at www.maplesoft.com, promotion code: AP38304); some mathematics concepts will be explained using this symbolic computing and graphing software in class; Maple worksheets will be posted; prior Maple versions are OK too. It is also possible to purchase a Student License directly from York. Previous versions, Maple 11, 10,..., are also OK.

Class Time

MWF 12:30 in CSE C [Computer Science and Engineering Building]

Tutorials (choose one!)

More info to come. They will start in the week of Monday, Sept 15. There are 3 slots for which you can, but don't have to register. Attendance is only mandatory for engineering students, but it is highly recommended (regular attendance will boost your grade; problems done in tutorials will not be discussed during office hours). Problem solving is learned in tutorials and while working on your own or in groups, not in class! Tests/exam evaluate you mostly on problem-solving skills. Pre-reading and class attendance is a pre-requisite to understand the concepts. After you review concepts in MasteringPhysics assignments, do some exercises (textbook, workbook) then you can proceed to solve 'real' problems! If you don't pre-read [each time], and don't come to class [every single one!], and don't practice for tutorials, then your chances of doing well in this course are NIL. This warning is based on student feedback from last year's course.

Special dates:

Course transfer ?

Please note that this course is for physical science majors and engineers. Life science students (biology, kinesiology, psychology) should be taking 1410A. That course is also calculus-based and qualifies for pre-med. Note that all 1010 students should have high-school prerequisites (calculus, physics, vectors), and that you will be competing in this cohort. Make up your mind ASAP is you wound up registering in the 'wrong' course. The labs are shared by both courses.
