YORK UNIVERSITY MBA STUDENTS USE BUILDING BLOCKS FOR COMPETITION TORONTO, January 24, 1997: Business students at York University's Schulich School of Business will put aside their textbooks for building blocks when they participate in the Real Property Development Association's (RPDA) Fifth Annual Building Competition, to be held on Saturday, Jan. 25 and Sunday, Jan. 26. This back-to-basics exercise will feature Master of Business Administration (MBA) students who compete in teams to design and construct buildings from modular plastic building pieces within a nine-hour time frame. The teams will design miniature replicas of office towers, commercial buildings, or high-rise apartment/office complexes. Their teams must comply with "zoning bylaws" which affect the design of the structures. The judges are prominent individuals chosen from the real property industry. They will award points to each team for originality, aesthetic appeal, and size. The winning teams will receive cash prizes totalling $500, $300, and $200, for first, second, and third, respectively. "This is a great chance to show what teamwork and creativity can produce," says Eric Angelini, the competition organizer and President of the RPDA. The RPDA is comprised of, and run primarily by, MBA students who are majoring in the study of real property. The association was formed after York introduced Canada's first MBA concentration in Real Property Development in 1991. Irwin Toys has supplied the girder-and-panel plastic building sets for the competition. The winning structures will be displayed at the head offices of the various sponsors of the event, including Toronto Dominion Bank, CIBC Development Corp., Morguard Investments, and Canada Lands Company Limited. The competition begins Saturday, Jan. 25 at 12 noon in the Schulich School of Business building, Financial Poste lounge, Room 015, at York University. Judging takes place Sunday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. Free parking is available in Lot GG adjacent to the Schulich School of Business.
