TORONTO, February 19, 1997: Metro chairman Alan Tonks, whose jurisdiction and job are on the line with the amalgamation of Metro's municipalities into one megacity, will provide "A Perspective on the Restructuring of Metro Municipalities" during the York Business Alliance (YBA) breakfast on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

The breakfast will be held from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. in The Blade and Firkin restaurant, 2nd floor, at The Ice Gardens at York University.

From 1982 to 1988, Tonks served as mayor of the City of York, one of the municipalities now slated for amalgamation.

Tonks began his political career in 1976, when he was elected controller of the City of York. In 1978, he became the city's budget chief, and he became deputy mayor in 1979. In 1980, he left the City of York, accepting a position to teach and hold the position of curriculum chairman at Gooderham Public School. Tonks returned to the City of York when elected as mayor in 1982.

Tonks has been a member of Metro Council, a commissioner on the Toronto Transit Commission, a board member on the Police Services Board and a governor on Exhibition Place's board, a director of GO transit and the Canadian National Exhibition Association. In 1993, he was elected vice-president of the World Executive of IULA (International Union of Local Authorities) and to the national board of directors of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

Tonks earned his BA (Honours) and his MA in political economy at York University. He earned a Master of Education degree from the University of Toronto in 1978. Before entering politics, Tonks worked for two years in Jamaica as a volunteer teacher with Canadian University Service Overseas (CUSO).

The YBA is a coalition of business leaders in the Greater Toronto Area working to build mutually beneficial partnerships between the business community and York University. The two principal goals of the YBA are: to raise funds for annual community scholarships which provide tuition funds to deserving students who have demonstrated academic excellence, and to bring together businesses in ways that help to enhance their relationship with York University and with each other.
