TORONTO, March 11, 1997: Renowned Canadian lawyer Edward Greenspan will speak about "The Role of the Criminal Defence Lawyer" on Wednesday, March 12 at York University's Osgoode Hall Law School.

Greenspan will be speaking at 12:30 p.m. in the Moot Court Room as a guest of the John White Society, a student organization at Osgoode Hall Law School which hosts speakers who are prominent in Canadian and international affairs. A question-and-answer session will follow the lecture.

Greenspan is senior partner at Greenspan & Associates. He graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1968 and has been a member of the Ontario bar since 1970. Greenspan serves on the editorial boards of various legal publications, including Dominion Law Reports, Criminal Law Quarterly, Canadian Criminal Cases, Martin's Annual Criminal Code, The Canadian Lawyer, and The Law Times. His own publications include works on aspects of criminal law and the criminal justice system. He has also co-authored a book titled Greenspan: The Case for the Defence.

He teaches criminal law at the University of Toronto and lectures at the Bar Admission Course in Criminal Law at the Osgoode Hall courts. Greenspan has also taught Criminal Procedure and Advanced Evidence in Criminal Cases at Osgoode Hall Law School. He has been listed in Canadian Who's Who since 1983. In 1982, Greenspan was awarded the honourable title of Queen's Counsel.

John White was the first attorney general of Upper Canada. The John White Society is a three-person committee of students at Osgoode Hall Law School which has been designated for the sole purpose of arranging guest speakers throughout the academic year. The John White Society has no political, national, or religious affiliations.
