YORK'S FACULTY OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES HOSTS WORLD RENOWNED ECOLOGICAL ECONOMIST

TORONTO, March 25, 1997: York University's Faculty of Environmental Studies (FES) is proud to present as its guest lecturer Herman Daly, one of the world's leading thinkers on economics and sustainable development.

Daly's lecture, "The Challenge of Ecological Economics: Some Major Issues," is part of this year's FES series on Global Political Economy and Ecology. The lecture, which will be held on Wednesday, March 26 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., will be hosted by the Graduate Environmental Studies Students' Association (GESSA).

Daly is well known for his interests in economic development, population, resources, and the environment. A renowned economist and author, Daly promotes economics that calculate the true cost of the depletion of natural resources. Daly, who has faced hostility from mainstream economists, was recently awarded one of four "Alternative Nobel Prizes" at the 17th annual Right Livelihood Awards ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden. He earned this honour for his work in ecological economics marking "significant contributions to the survival of humanity."

Daly and theologian John B. Cobb Jr. co-authored For the Common Good (1989; 1994). Their book received the 1991 Grawemeyer Award for Ideas for Improving World Order. Daly is also the recipient of the Heineken Prize for Environmental Science awarded by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has written numerous books, including Toward a Steady-State Economy (1973); Steady-State Economics (1977; 1991); Valuing the Earth (1993); and Beyond Growth (1996).

He is currently Senior Research Scholar at the University of Maryland, School of Public Affairs. From 1988 to 1994, Daly was Senior Economist in the Environment Department of the World Bank. Up to 1988, he was Alumni Professor of Economics at Louisiana State University, where he taught economics for 20 years.

Daly earned a BA from Rice University and a PhD from Vanderbilt University. He has served as Ford Foundation Visiting Professor at the University of Ceara in Brazil, as a Research Associate at Yale University, as a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University, and as a Senior Fulbright Lecturer in Brazil. He has also served on the boards of directors of numerous environmental organizations, including the International Society for Ecological Economics, the Beijer Ecological Economics Institute of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, the WorldWatch Institute, and is co-founder and associate editor of the journal Ecological Economics.
