Controlling Air Pollution: is the Pain Worth the Gain? Health Canada Air Pollution Expert to Examine Link Between Air Quality and Human Health During Air and Waste Management Conference at York U.

TORONTO, May 4, 1999 -- Dr. Richard T. Burnett, a senior research scientist and leading expert in air quality management with the Environmental Health Directorate, Health Canada, will deliver the 1999 Morris Katz Memorial Lecture in Environmental Research entitled Controlling air pollution: Is the pain worth the gain? at York University, Wednesday, May 5, 1999, 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Burnett will discuss how air pollution has been linked to human health problems including premature mortality, cardio-respiratory diseases, and asthma attacks.

Burnett's lecture, which kicks off the Air and Waste Management Association (Ontario Section) Spring Conference, May 5 to 7, 1999, at York University, follows last week's release of a report by the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario which gave the Ontario Government a failing grade on its environmental track record. The Morris Katz Memorial Lecture series commemorates the life and work of York University chemistry professor Morris Katz who died in 1987.
