Three of Canada's Veteran Theatre Professionals Bring their Talents to York University

TORONTO, May 15, 2000 -- York University's Department of Theatre announces the appointment of award-winning theatre professionals Paul Lampert and Teresa Przybylski to the faculty and Richard Rose as a guest director for Theatre@York in the 2000/01 season.

"Being able to bring on board some of today's most exciting working professionals is not only an indication of our continuing strength but also a window on our future direction," says theatre department chair Peter McKinnon.

Paul Lampert has worked extensively as a director, actor, playwright and teacher in Canada and Europe. His many credits include six seasons with the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, three seasons with the Blyth Festival and two years as associate director of Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon.

Between 1987 and 1989 he worked exclusively in Europe with such varied companies as Poland's Movement Theatre BLIK and the International Theatre in Vienna. He returned to Poland in 1994 to direct the national premiere of David Mamet's Oleanna at the Stary Theatre, Krakow.

While pursuing an MFA degree in Theatre at York University, Lampert directed the Canadian premiere of New York playwright Nicky Silver's Raised in Captivity which went on to the International Student Theatre Festival in Berlin in 1998. He is also a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada's Acting Section. Prior to joining York's theatre department Professor Lampert was the artistic director of the George Brown Theatre.

Dora award-winner Teresa Przybylski is an architect and theatre designer with professional experience in Canada and Europe. Well-known as a designer for opera, theatre, dance and film, her credits include the Stratford Festival, Canadian Opera Company, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Young People's Theatre, Tarragon Theatre, Factory Theatre, National Arts Centre, Le ThÈ’tre franÁais de Toronto, Native Earth, Necessary Angel, VideoCabaret and others.

Her most recent projects are set designer of Titus Andronicus for the current Stratford Festival season and Crimson Veil at Toronto's Factory Theatre. She holds Masters degrees in Fine Arts and Engineering-Architecture from Krakow, Poland.

Przybylski is the recipient of three Dora Mavor Moore Awards including Outstanding Costume Design and Outstanding Design, having been nominated 15 times. She joins the theatre department's strong design team of lighting director Peter McKinnon and stage designers Shawn Kerwin and Phillip Silver.

Richard Rose returns to his alma mater to direct a Theatre@York production of Colleen Murphy's work-in-progress Piper, a fantastic, modernist retelling of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

Soon after graduating from York's theatre department in 1978, Rose founded the Necessary Angel Theatre Company. The play Tamara, written by John Krizanc and directed by Rose, debuted in Toronto in 1980 and went on to become a theatrical phenomenon winning four Dora awards in 1982 including best direction. Tamara had long runs in New York, Los Angeles and Mexico City. As well as being artistic director of Necessary Angel, Rose has directed at several other companies including Canadian Stage, Tarragon, The Great Canadian Theatre Company, the Blyth Festival and Ontario's Stratford Festival, directing Titus Andronicus in the 2000 season.

York University's Department of Theatre, the largest and most comprehensive in eastern Canada, combines in-depth academic studies and rigorous practical training in all aspects of theatre. Mounting productions for public presentation is an integral part of the curriculum. Each year, the Department's in-house production company, Theatre @ York, presents a season of fully-staged productions as well as workshop performances. All Theatre students are involved in some capacity, on stage or backstage, designing the lighting, constructing sets, researching the background of the play, acting, creating costumes, managing the box office and whatever else is required to put on a play.
