MEDIA ADVISORY September 29, 1997 WHAT: "Reconciliation, Restitution and Race: Two Perspectives" A lecture by Commissioner Dumisa Ntsebeza, of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and Advocate Johnny De Lange, MP for the African National Congress. They will discuss the legal issues surrounding South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the role of healing and forgiveness in this process, and will answer questions from audience members. Presented by York University's Osgoode Hall Law School, The First Nations Law Students' Association and the John White Society. WHO: Dumisa Ntsebeza is a Commissioner on South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the head of the TRC's Investigative Unit. He has been particularly active in TRC hearings dealing with complete amnesty requests by criminals who assassinated ANC leaders. His past experience includes teaching criminal and human rights law at a South African law school. Johnny De Lange is a member of the South African Parliament representing the ANC, and Chair of the Parliamentary Sub-Committee on Justice in South Africa. Before entering politics, he was a member of the Cape Bar and the Director of the Legal Education, Research and Training Project of the National Association of Democratic Lawyers. Even though he is one of the country's younger MPs, he has taken a leadership role in Nelson Mandela's government. This is the first visit to Canada for both De Lange and Ntsebeza.
