Installation of Mahatma Gandhi Bust Honours Spiritual Leader's Legacy, York University's Connection to India
During India's Golden Jubilee of Independence last year, the Indian government commissioned Delhi-based artist Mr. Ram Sutar to create a beautiful bronze sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi, who is recognized as the Father of the Indian nation. Last January, outgoing Indian Consul General Rajeev Kumar Bhatia presented the bust as a gift to York University from the people of India in recognition of York's commitment to fostering mutual understanding between India and Canada, through its Center for Asian Studies, its India Studies program, and the large number of students of Indian heritage.
Mahatma Gandhi is best known as an apostle of non-violence and peace the world over. Through non-violence and ėsatyagraha' (fight for righteous cause), he united all the peoples of India against the British colonial rule. Gandhi's salt march across India in the 1930s and his philosophy of non-violence and simplicity of living are part of his legacy. Members of the York community will be able to reflect on that legacy when viewing the bust, which has been given a permanent place of honour in the lobby of York University's Scott Library.
Consul General for India in Toronto, Chandra Mohan Bhandari, York University President Dr. Lorna Marsden, and Vice-President (University Advancement) Gary J. Smith will speak at the installation ceremony.
WHEN/WHERE:
A reception will follow the installation and dedication ceremony in the Faculty Club, S167 Ross
