UN Deputy Secretary-General Louise FrÈchette To Offer Insights On "The United Nations In The Next Millennium" At York University's Glendon College

TORONTO, October 23, 1998 -- With the recent election of Canada to the United Nations Security Council, the role of this country in world affairs has gained greater prominence. Canada will help to lay the foundation of the UN into the next century. And one Canadian, UN Deputy Secretary-General Louise FrÈchette, is a key player in promoting the UN's mandate. She will share her experience and unique vision for the UN during her keynote address entitled "The United Nations in the Next Millennium" on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

FrÈchette's speech, which will alternate between English and French, begins 6:00 p.m. in the Glendon College Cafeteria, York Hall, 2275 Bayview Avenue, Toronto.

A former Canadian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, FrÈchette is the first person to be appointed to the newly established post of Deputy Secretary-General, which she assumed February 1998. The post was established to help manage Secretariat operations and raise the United Nations profile and leadership in the economic and social spheres, and strengthen it as a leading centre for development policy and assistance.

FrÈchette's long and distinguished career has also included serving as Canada's Deputy Minister of National Defence and Associate Deputy Minister of Finance. Between June 1985 and September 1988, she was Canada's Ambassador to Argentina, with concurrent accreditation to Uruguay and Paraguay.

FrÈchette's address marks the tenth annual John W. Holmes Memorial Lecture. Co-hosted by the Canadian Institute of International Affairs (CIIA) which is housed at Glendon, the lecture honours John Holmes, a Canadian diplomat, director-general of the CIIA in Toronto, and a lecturer in Canadian foreign policy at Glendon College who died in 1988. A reception will follow the address.

Vice-President (University Advancement) Gary J. Smith, a Glendon College graduate (BA ë68), career diplomat and former Canadian Ambassador, will thank FrÈchette for her remarks.
