ORGANIZED CRIME AND CORRUPTION: YORK UNIVERSITY'S NATHANSON CENTRE TO HOST PANEL DISCUSSION FEATURING TOP JOURNALIST, RESEARCHER AND DEFENSE LAWYER October 31, 1997
WHAT: "Researching Organized Crime: Three Distinct Perspectives" In this panel discussion, prominent journalist Stevie Cameron, McGill University international crime expert Tom Naylor, and leading criminal defense lawyer John Rosen will offer three unique perspectives on researching organized crime and corruption. The panel will examine how different professions -- journalists, academics and lawyers -- research organized crime, what difficulties they face in gaining access to people and information, and how their results vary, depending on their goals and techniques. The Nathanson Centre, founded earlier this year, brings together those working in the field of organized crime and corruption to share experiences and resources. The Centre helps fill the urgent need for research, policy development, law reform and education in this increasingly important societal and public policy area. Prior to the panel discussion, Nathanson Centre director and York Professor Margaret Beare will unveil a plaque to be mounted in the Osgoode Hall Law School Rotunda honouring the Centre's founding benefactor, Mark Nathanson, and his parents after whom the Centre is named.
