Maclean's Ranking Lists York Among Top 5 Universities
York U. Leads Again in Areas Most Meaningful to Students: Bursary, Scholarship Support; Most-Educated Faculty; Investment in Student Services

TORONTO, November 7, 1999 -- York University's commitment to students and to excellence in teaching and research is clear to see in its continued high ranking in indicators that matter most to students, York University President Dr. Lorna Marsden said today in response to the release of the annual Maclean's magazine university rankings issue.

York University offers students the highest percentage of classes taught by tenured faculty, meaning students benefit directly from a high level of scholarship and academic excellence in the classroom. York also demonstrates its commitment to serving students by spending more than any other university in its category on student services. And, for the first time, York University spent the highest percentage of its budget on student scholarships and bursaries. York rose in its reputational ranking, appearing among the top five universities as most innovative, leaders of tomorrow, and best overall. In addition, York made progress in the areas of student awards and alumni support. The rankings again place York 5th overall in the comprehensive category, which consists of 12 universities.

"York University continues to have the most classes taught by tenured faculty, the greatest financial commitment to student services, and we have responded to the needs of students with an investment in student financial support second to none," said Marsden. "York University, now celebrating its 40th anniversary, has clearly evolved and grown over the decades, but its dedication to excellence, innovation, and its students has been its guiding force."

Marsden said there are, however, critical questions facing all universities today as well as the provincial government, students and parents: How do universities properly prepare for the huge increase in university students expected in the Year 2003 and on? Marsden said York University needs not only capital funds for buildings to meet the desperate need for space on campus, but also full funding for the huge wave of students looking for high quality, accessible higher education.

York University, Canada's third largest university, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. It is nationally and internationally respected for its innovative research and award-winning teaching. With its combination of dedicated and talented faculty, opportunities for bright and ambitious students, dynamic curriculum and modern campuses in one of North America's most influential urban centres, York University is setting the modern standard in academic excellence.
