MEDIA ADVISORY TORONTO, November 14, 1997 -- The Centre for Research on Work and Society at York University is sponsoring a lecture by Canadian Auto Workers President Basil "Buzz" Hargrove entitled "The Future of Unionism" on Tuesday, November 18, 1997. Hargrove, one of Canada's most prominent labour leaders, will address current issues and hard questions about where unionism is headed. A question-and-answer session with students will follow. As the National President of the 215,000-member Canadian Auto Workers' Union since 1992, Hargrove has successfully negotiated collective agreements for workers in the auto and aerospace industries, rail and air transport sectors, and fisheries. Hargrove has been an outspoken advocate of social unionism, working with and supporting other trade unions in Canada, and campaigning vigorously for human rights and trade union rights around the world. York's Centre for Research on Work and Society was founded in 1991 to create a network of researchers from the union movement as well as from York and other universities, and to establish a culture of union-university partnership. The Centre's goals include providing a forum for research that is grounded in community-defined problems, and extending the ability of trade unions to intervene in the major policy issues that affect the Canadian world of work. Hargrove will speak at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 1997 in the Moot Court Room of York University's Osgoode Hall Law School.
