Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement Congress Examines Changing Educational Needs in a Global Environment TORONTO, November 23, 2000 -- York University, with support from The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE/UT), will host the 14th International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement (ICSEI), January 5 - 9, 2001, on the theme of Equity, Globalization and Change: Education for the 21st Century.Keynote speaker Stephen Lewis, former Canadian ambassador to the United Nations and currently adjunct professor at York University, will open the conference with a speech challenging the wide-spread belief that globalization is a positive force for equity in education. He will argue that globalization and new technologies have exacerbated disparities in education, especially in developing countries. The Congress will bring together leading education researchers, practitioners and policymakers from more than 30 countries to discuss topics such as: local initiatives to promote change in curriculum; teaching and leadership practices such as inclusive schooling methods to meet the needs of a diverse school body; classroom computers, the Internet and other educational technologies; ways to improve the learning experiences of children such as media literacy and global studies; and how teachers and administrators accommodate change. "Increasingly, all societies are becoming linked globally," says Dr. Alison Griffith, ICSEI 2001 chair and Associate Dean of Field Development at York Universitys Faculty of Education. "With immigration and new technologies transforming the educational landscape, we need to recognize that the ethnic and language diversity of our classrooms requires a wide range of teaching strategies sensitive to students needs in order to ensure all children are given an equitable opportunity to learn." Dr. Cecilia Reynolds, ICSEI 2001 program co-chair and Associate Dean at OISE/UT, says the Congresss focus on equity in a global context places the spotlight on one of the most difficult areas of change in school effectiveness. "How do we ensure that innovations and new technologies benefit a wide range of our students? How are diverse communities enriched by current visions for education? What measures will let us see the impact of reforms aimed at improving equity? This conference is intended to address these and other questions," says Reynolds. Among the papers and presentations:
The Congress program will include school visits across the Greater Toronto Area to showcase the innovative teacher education partnerships Yorks Faculty of Education has established with surrounding schools. Conference participants will visit the T. L. Kennedy Secondary School teacher education site in Mississauga, the Western Technical Collegiate Institute site in Toronto, and others. ICSEI was created by an international group of researchers, policy specialists and school practitioners dedicated to building a network and expanding the base of research on school effectiveness and improvement. The first ICSEI meeting was held in London in 1988, and subsequent annual meetings have been held in Rotterdam, Jerusalem, Cardiff, Victoria, Norrkaping, Melbourne, Leeuwarden, Manchester, San Antonio and Hong Kong. ICSEI 2001 will be held at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, 123 Queen Street West, Toronto. -30- For more information, including a detailed schedule and speakers abstracts, visit: http://www.edu.yorku.ca/ICSEI/home.shtml, or contact: Dr. Alison Griffith Dr. Cecilia Reynolds Anderson Coward Ken Turriff |
