by Mary-Louise Craven

Resources
As background to our topic on genres, we looked at the following documents.
Agre, P. "Designing Genres for new media: Social, Economic, and Political contexts."
(click here for a summary of this article).

Crowston K & Williams, M. "Reproduced and emergent genres of communication on the World-Wide Web."
(click here for a summary of this article.)

We also looked at specific definitions of "genre" found in:
Grossman, et al. 1998. "The interpretation of Meaning," in Mediamaking: Mass media in a Popular Culture. Sage Publications.

Orlikowski, W. & J. Yates. 1994. "Genre Repertoire: The Structuring of Communicative Practices in Organizations," Administrative Science Quarterly, 39, 4, 1994: 541-574.(Their definition of genre as "a distinctive type of communication action, characterized by a socially recognized communicative purpose and common aspects of form" proved to be very helpful in constructing our taxonomy
