The Social Code of Dress The social code of one's dress is a sign frequently used in television programs to connote the personality and characteristics of the characters. Programmers take into consideration the fact that different audiences are tuning in and out of their show, and that many viewers may not be familiar with the personalities of the characters in the program. Social signs such as dress can be used to connote the personality traits of the characters allowing the audience to easily "read" the show and quickly learn the characteristics of the characters. Pheobe Pheobes clothing is a sign which signifies her character as being the stereotypical dumb blonde. In this specific episode Pheobe is wearing a bright blue outfit, with her hair tied in ponytails in matching blue furry hair ties. Her clothing can be viewed as a sign which signifies her childlike personality, as she is known for her childish and absurd remarks. Pheobe's clothing also signifies her easygoing character. One who is not familiar with the program Friends would be able to "read" certain personality traits about Phoebe through her clothing that would correctly correspond to her character. Rachel Rachels clothing can also be viewed as a sign which signifies her character. Rachel is a character who is idealized for her appearance. Rachel is always dressed in the latest fashions which also corresponds to her profession of working at "Ralph Lauren." In the episode "The One With the Rumour," dennotatively Rachel is wearing a lace blouse. Connotatively, Rachels lace blouse signifies her beautiful and sexy character. Rachel is always shown wearing tight fitting clothing to show off her perfect body figure. These social signs in Friends not only allow audiences to easily "read" Rachel's personality but they also signify a major theme in Friends, being its obsession with physical appearances.
