The Patriarchical Oppression of Women and the Environment
The patriarchal system that exists today is destroying the planet and its resources while oppressing women (Sturgeon, 28). Industrial development has created environmental threats such as degradation of land, deforestation, climate change and global warming (Mies & Shiva, 278). Ecofeminism tries to encourage the spirituality of the environment and its protectors - women. In fact, one explanation of ecofeminism went so far as to link it with the term "Mother Earth" (Gunn Allen, 52). Another philosophy that stems from liberal feminism points out that nature has often been identified as a woman, and just as women have been dominated in the patriarchal system, so has the environment. The root of liberal feminist would argue that both the environment and women are dominated. Ecofeminists roots are very spiritual, and earth centred. Ecofeminists wish to return to days without patriarchal domination and live in harmony with the earth.
