About Pay Equity

York University and the York University Staff Association (YUSA) reached an agreement on a Pay Equity Plan in compliance with the Pay Equity Act for the YUSA Unit 2 group, on August 19th 2013. As such, individuals who were employed by York University in a part-time capacity between 1998 and 2012, and classified as YUSA Unit 2, may be eligible for a retroactive Pay Equity payment.

The purpose of the Pay Equity Act; R.S.O. 1990, and the Pay Equity Amendment Act, 1993 is to address gender imbalances and provide wage parity between women and men working in jobs of equal or comparable value.

The Act requires all private sector employers with 10 or more employees and all public sector employers in Ontario to compare, within a specific organization, jobs done by women to those done by men.

In order to achieve Pay Equity for the employees in the YUSA Unit 2 group, the employer and YUSA jointly developed a gender neutral comparison system based on the criteria of skill, effort, responsibility and working conditions to determine the value of work performed in this group. While the Act only requires that jobs identified as predominantly female are eligible for adjustment if they are found to be under-compensated when compared to a male job of comparable value, the parties agreed to apply a pay equity adjustment to all employees in order to also achieve internal equity.

In order to determine your eligibility to receive a Pay Equity payment, please complete and sign the Pay Equity Adjustment Request Form and return it as soon as possible. If you would like a form mailed to you, please contact yusa2payequity@yorku.ca or (416) 736-2100 ext. 40091.
