Reading:
- Chapter 4 of the Ramsden book
- Who Your Students Are from the Carnegie Mellon course design website
In the second piece I am particularly interested in the section on Intellectual Development, so please do pay some attention to trying to sort out the descriptions of the four levels.
A related idea is that holding a belief that intelligence grows with experience rather than remaining fixed can have a profound effect on the way in which students approach school tasks. This Mind Hacks post is not required reading; but if you have five minutes more, I think you might find its report of Carol Dweck’s research provocative for how we think of our students’ intellectual abilities at the university level.
Viewing:- Teaching Teaching and Understanding Understanding: From a Student Learning Perspective. A University of Aarhus film production (20 minutes)
Thanks to Yan Sun for pointing to this film. It gives a clear account that is both intelligent nad humourous of some of the points discussed in Ramsden.
Writing:- Post a reflection on the material assigned for this class to the Dialogue Forum.
- Read a sample of the other students’ response papers and write a reply to at least two of these before the next class on May 21.
You are welcome to write on any aspect of the material that interests you.
