Please compose an essay of 6-7 pages in response to one of the following prompts:

1. Compare and contrast the depiction of Augustus Caesar in two or more of the following texts: Virgil’s Aeneid, Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Suetonius’ Life of the Deified Augustus, Tacitus’ Annals of Imperial Rome, and Augustus’ autobiography, Res Gestae. (Your answer should be sensitive to the different genres and contexts of these works.)

2. The Pax Romana was good for the people of Rome. (Your answer should be sensitive to the question of who the people (or peoples) of Rome might be). |
3. Ovid’s Metamorphoses plays with the idea that erotic love is a dangerous thing. Discuss the depiction of love and desire in two or more of the readings from throughout our course, and place your discussion within the wider context of Roman culture (be it political, military or economic activity, religious and social practices, moral codes, etc.). |
