It is all residents’ responsibility to be familiar with all rules and regulations of Stong Residence.

Alcohol
The laws of Ontario pertaining to alcohol & drugs apply to the Residence & College. You may consume alcoholic beverages within the confines of your own bedroom only. Open containers of alcohol may not be taken into any other areas including hallways and common rooms. Consumption of alcohol by any individual under 19 and possession, use, or distribution of illegal drugs, are against the law and are grounds for eviction.
Beer kegs are not permitted in Stong Residence.

Common Rooms
Common rooms are located on every other floor and are equipped with a microwave, fridge, stove, TV and VCR. Students are not allowed to remove anything including furniture from common rooms. Residents using these facilities should make every effort to keep them as clean as possible. Alcohol and smoking are not permitted in common rooms.

Cooking and Electrical Appliances
The University maintains a regulation forbidding cooking in residence rooms. Electric kettles and refrigerators are no problem. Please limit your cooking to Common Room kitchenettes.

Cult-Proof Yourself
Refrain from giving out your address or telephone number to persons on campus who may invite you to socials, Bible-meetings, parties, lectures, etc.. Instead, ask the solicitor for his/her organization’s card or telephone number. You may verify the validity of the group or organization by contacting OSA, 103 Central Square or ask your Don about it.

Damage to Residence Property
If you notice or witness damage to the building, bring that information to the attention of your Don. Residents responsible for damage in the residence will be billed for the cost of cleaning, repair, or replacement.

Damage to Personal Property
The residence, College or University is not responsible for personal property either in your room or in the building, that is lost or damaged due to theft, fire, water, or any other cause. It is strongly recommended that students make their own arrangements to insure their belongings.

Don-on-Duty

There is a Don-on-duty from 4:30pm to 8:30am daily and 24 hours on weekends and holidays. Contact the DOD Emergency pager should you encounter any serious or urgent difficulties. This is a numeric pager. Dial the pager number, wait for the prompt, enter the phone number where you can be reached. Wait at that number for the DOD to return your page by phone.

Contact Housing or Campus Security outside the pager working hours. Security can be reached at 33333 from campus phones and at 736-5333 from off-campus and non Telecom York phones.

Important Information: Do not page the DOD Emergency pager if you experience a lock-out during University office hours. Should you experience a lock-out or facility-related difficulty during regular office hours, please contact Complex II Student Housing Services in Rm 101, Bethune College.

Drugs
The presence or use of illegal drugs is not permitted in the residence. Students found to be using, possessing or distributing illegal drugs can face eviction from Residence.

Elevators
Playing 'elevator tag' or tampering with elevators in any way is not only costly but dangerous and foolish and may be construed as an act of vandalism. The perpetrator(s) are subject to formal Disciplinary action. Repairs to the elevators, over and above normal wear and tear, can be charged to the house funds.

Emergencies
Contact your Don or the Don on Duty pager in case of an emergency. If you require emergency services or immediate medical response, dial ext. 33333 or 416 736-5333. York Security dispatch will contact fire or ambulance (911) services for you and will escort this service to you.
Because we live on a large campus, it is normally more efficient for emergency services to be accompanied to our building by York Security.

Escort
Student Security offers a free area van service from 6pm - 2am, Monday through Sunday, with the exception of Thursday when the hours are 6pm - 3am. Dial ext. 55454 and give your name, pick up & drop off locations. Refrain from walking alone even for short distances at night.

External Doors
Do not hold open external Residence doors for persons whom you do not know. It is not rude, it is the safe thing to do. Do not prop open external doors for any length of time. Close any external doors you find left ajar.

Fire Alarms
Should there be a fire alarm, put on your shoes and coat, lock your bedroom door and exit the Residence by the stairs only. Residents will exit the building by the south external doors (Pond side) and will gather on the grass at the pond.

FIRE SAFETY AND FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT
Pull stations are located on every floor by the fire exits (stairways). They are there for your protection and are not to be tampered with! Anyone causing a false fire alarm or tampering with any fire fighting protection equipment will be subject to formal Disciplinary action, as well as fines levied by the University ($100.00 plus labor and material) and by the College ($150.00), and may be subject to concurrent legal action. It is essential that all residents cooperate in the prevention of tampering with fire fighting equipment.

Extinguishers are located throughout the building as well. Use the appropriate extinguisher to put out small fires. Fire doors (those leading to the stairwells) should never be propped open as the stairwell will fill with smoke and cut off your only egress to safety.

Furniture
Common Room furniture belongs in Common Rooms, bedroom furniture belongs in bedrooms. The furniture in your Residence bedroom is your responsibility. Residence bedroom furniture may not be stored in student storage room and rooms must be returned in the original condition upon move-out.

Fuses
Please do not use multiple appliances at once, as this may cause fuses to shut off. If your fuse goes off please contact housing or your don. After hours, you may also contact the Don on Duty.

Gossip and Slander
Gossip and Slander can have detrimental effect on the entire Residence community. Please recall the Residence Contract you signed, stipulating that Gossip and Slander may be grounds for eviction.

Guests
You may sign-in a maximum of two guests at any one time. Guests must be signed in and signed out during Night Porter hours. By signing in guests you assume responsibility for their actions, therefore, you must accompany your guests at all times. Unaccompanied guests and/or unruly guests may be asked by a Don or the Night Porter on Duty to leave the Residence. Guests must carry a guest pass with them at all times and may be asked by a Don or the Night Porter on duty to present the card at any time.
An occasional overnight guest is normally acceptable. Overnight guests, however, cannot stay longer than three consecutive nights.
COHABITATION ON A PERMANENT OR SEMI-PERMANENT BASIS IS NOT PERMITTED!
Residents in double rooms must make sure that their roommate knows in advance about their over-night guest and feels comfortable with it.

Holiday Closure
The York University Undergraduate Residences will be closed during the Christmas holidays. Students are not legally entitled to be present in the residence building during the holiday closure unless they have written permission from the university. Security personnel have the authority to evict individuals for trespassing during this period.
Further, residents are required to leave residence 24 hours after their last exam during the exam period in December. If a student does not have any exams the student must leave residence 24 hrs after the last day of classes.

Kegs
Kegs and keg parties are prohibited in Residence.

Key Cards
Residence access key cards issued to residents are for personal use only. Under no circumstances may residents loan keys to any other persons. Residents are cautioned to lock bedroom doors at all times, including during short absences within the Floor/House and/or Residence. Your room key card is programmed to open both the south & north Entrance Doors as well as your House Common Room.

Kitchens (and Common Rooms)
The cleanliness of the House Kitchen and Common Room is the responsibility of each Residence House. Charges will be assessed for additional cleaning and may be posted to your student account. Continued abuse of these areas may result in levied fines against House Funds. Common Room recycling disposal is the responsibility of each House.

Laundry Room
Laundry facilities are located in the basement (B) level. The cost of a wash or dry cycle is $1.25. The machines are operated by means of a “smart card” which can be replenished at the machine in the Bethune College Lobby or York Lanes (next to Second Cup). You must provide your own detergent & fabric softener. Items left unattended in the laundry room are the responsibility of their owner. Tampering with or vandalizing the laundry machines in any way will result in disciplinary action.

Lockouts
If you are locked out please visit the Housing Office at 101 Bethune College between the hours of 8:30am-4:30pm Monday—Friday. After hours, call the DOD, but be prepared to wait as Dons have lives as well. Residents who repeatedly find themselves locked out of their rooms may be sanctioned.

Lost Keys
Students who lose their keys will be charged $100.00 for a key replacement. Students who lose their keys during evenings or on weekends will have to wait until the next business day to arrange replacement with Housing. Dons can open a student’s door with a back-up key, but will do so only once.

Mail
You have been issued a mailbox key. Individual Resident mailboxes are located outside of Room 204 on the Lobby (L) level. All correspondence should be addressed in the following manner:

Should you receive a package too large to be placed in your mailbox, Housing will notify you to pick it up at their office location, Room 101 Bethune College.

Maintenance Requests
Should you require maintenance to repair something in your room, please complete a maintenance request form online or get one at the Complex II Housing Services Office, 101 Bethune, or from the student Night Porter on duty.

Move out
When moving out, students must leave their room in the same condition as move-in and are required to remove all personal belongings and place all university furniture in their original position. Additional charges will be posted to student accounts for damages or cleaning if rooms are not left in acceptable condition.
Students are required to move out 24 hours after their last exam. Extensions will require approval from Housing and the Residence Life Coordinator and will only be granted in extenuating circumstances.

Musical Instruments
Playing musical instruments at any time which disrupts other residents is not permitted. A music practice room is available for sign-out through the SRP.

Music Practice Room
The key to the Stong College Music Practice Room is available for sign out through the SRP.

Noise
Noise which disturbs a fellow Resident is not acceptable in any area of the Residence at any time. Excessive noise constitutes noise that is audible from any room and is disturbing or has the potential to disturb residents. It is expected that regardless of the time of night or day of the week residents will keep noise in the residence to a minimum and will respect the rights of others to live and study peacefully. A quiet hours policy for evenings and nights is also in effect. (See Quiet hours)

Parking
Students who wish to park vehicles on campus must do so in accordance with University Parking Regulations. If you are parking on regular basis, you will find it economical to get a year-long or seasonal pass from the Parking Office.

Pets
Pets of any kind may not be kept in Residence rooms nor may they visit Residence floors for any length of time.

Postering
Students may not post material on the metal of bedroom doors. Postering must be in good taste, and acceptable for the Residence community and is limited to bedroom door bulletin boards.

Practical Jokes
Any practical joke that results in personal injury, humiliation, physical damage to personal or Residence property or that interferes with Stong Residence Staff is not permitted.

Quiet Hours
Quiet Hours are uniform throughout the building. Residence Houses may not establish their own quiet hours. On weeknights, including Thursdays, quiet hours are in effect at 9pm to study and at 11pm to sleep. On Friday and Saturday nights, quiet hours are in effect at midnight to sleep. Just prior to and during exam periods quiet hours are in effect 23 ½ hours daily. Details will be posted. Noise which disturbs a fellow Resident is not acceptable in any area of the Residence at any time.

Residents are encouraged to monitor noise levels and also to approach noisemakers directly. The House Don or Don on Duty may be called upon to deal with noisemakers if the disruption continues.

Recycling
Small blue bins are located in each room and residents are encouraged to recycle. Large recycling bins are located in each common room and residents can empty their blue-bins in these. House Dons will set up recycling schedules for each house to empty these large bins.

Repairs
If anything in your room breaks or ceases to work, or you notice anything in the residence that requires repair please contact the Housing Office or fill out a Maintenance Request Form, available at the Porter’s Desk.

Smoking
Stong Residence is a smoke-free environment. Smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or any other substance in any area of the Residence, including bedrooms, is strictly prohibited.

Sports Equipment Storage Room
Hockey/Equipment Lockers and indoor bike lock-up racks are contained in Room 006 on the (B) level and space is available on a first come first served basis. Residents are encouraged to use this area for equipment storage as equipment storage is not available in any other area of the Residence (with the exception of your own bedroom). Residents may not store equipment in the hallways or Common Rooms.

This service is free. Further information regarding programming key cards for 006 is available through the SRP. A small deposit is required to obtain access.

Storage
Stong Residence does not provide storage space for residents.

Study Hall
The General Purpose Room (202) may be used during normal Night Porter Hours as a quiet study area. It is equipped with networked computer terminals and printer that may be used in short intervals by residents who wish to check e-mail, access library holdings or to work on short assignments. Users must leave the room when the Night Porter goes off duty.

Telephones
Telephones can be found on every other floor in the residence. These telephones are for local calls only.

Violence
Violent acts, e.g., assault, threat of assault, are expressly forbidden in the Residence or elsewhere on campus. A victim of violence should notify one of the Residence Personnel or Campus Security immediately. We must insist that at least one of the Residence Personnel be informed if the Police are going to be entering the residence. Residents found responsible for an act of violence in the Residence or elsewhere on campus are subject to formal Disciplinary action.

Vacuums
Each Residence Don suite is equipped with a vacuum which is available for use by residents living in the House. See your Don for sign-out procedures.

Video Library
The Residence owns rental VCRs and a video collection. Residents may sign-out VCRs and movies during regular Night Porter hours. Contact the SRP for sign-out procedures.

Washrooms
All washrooms in the residence are co-ed with the exception of the 5th floor. This washroom is for females only. Although it is recognized that co-ed washrooms may be new to many residents, it is expected that all residents and their guests respect the privacy of others and will respond with maturity. Bathrooms are shared on each floor by 22 students, so please keep this in mind with respect to keeping the bathrooms clean. Any bathroom products or kitchen items that are left in the bathroom will be thrown away.

Weapons
Weapons of any kind are not allowed in Residence at any time, under any circumstances.

Windows
Throwing of objects from Residence windows at any time or suspending objects from windows is forbidden! In the event any object(s) is/are thrown from the residence, each student will be fined $100.00 Person(s) caught throwing objects out of windows will be subject to formal Disciplinary action, and/or concurrent civil action.

Withdrawal
All students who wish to withdraw from resident must make formal arrangements to do so with Complex II Housing Office. Housing will provide appropriate documents and procedural and policy information for residents. Please note that in order to maintain eligibility to remain in resident, you must remain registered in a minimum of 24 credits, unless the Residence Life Coordinator waives such condition in writing. Any student who does not meet this condition may be required to withdraw from Residence.
