Assignment 1 is marked and ready to be picked up. You may pick up the assignment from N424 during the teaching assistant's consultation hours that are posted on the bulletin board beside N424.
Overall Comments
The assignments were quite well done. I was pleased to see some excellent essays. I also saw that many of you had taken photographs and collected other materials during the fieldwork. I am impressed.
Two issues arose fairly often. First, try to develop the thesis of your assignment from the beginning of the assignment. You were asked to state a thesis in the first paragraph and then, provide evidence to support it in the following sections. Several of the teaching assistants have provided detailed comments about the arguments so please review the comments and discuss them with the person who marked your assignment.
Second, there is a problem with inadvertent plagiarism. Many students are paraphrasing ideas without citing the source. Again, the teaching assistants have highlighted this issue on many assignments, so please see them for advice to avoid more serious charges of plagiarism.
I Don't Agree With My Mark
Please check the comments and the marks. If you have any questions about your mark, please see the teaching assistant who marked it no later than December 7, 2001. You may contact the teaching assistant by email if you are completely unable to meet during his or her office hours. The email addresses were sent in an earlier email and they are posted on the website.
If you and the teaching assistant are unable to reach an amicable agreement about the assignment's mark, you may submit an appeal to Professor Preston. It will include the marked assignment, an unmarked and complete copy of the assignment, and a note explaining why you think the mark is wrong. The note, copy of the assignment and marked assignment should be datestamped in N430 and placed in Professor Preston's box. The assignment will be marked by a second teaching assistant. The mark of the second TA is binding whether it improves or deteriorates. You must pick up your assignment and discuss it with the appropriate teaching assistant no later than DEC. 7, 2001.
