Afke Siezen joined the Migration Policy Department (MPD) in 2008. At the MPD she is responsible for advising the Minister for Immigration and Asylum, representing the Netherlands and contributing to national and international/European developments in the field of migration policy. She is an expert in several areas of migration policy, including Article 1F, medical aspects in the asylum procedure/FGM, and the strategic country approach with regard to return. Until recently she represented the Ministry in the European Union High Level Working Group on Asylum and Migration.
With regard to Article 1F, Afke worked on the extensive evaluation of ten years of exclusion policy in the Netherlands. Most recently in June 2011, she initiated and organized an international workshop on Exclusion/Article 1F within the framework of the Intergovernmental Consultations on Migration, Asylum and Refugees (IGC), including preparatory research and formulating a questionnaire in order to contribute to an exchange of States practices regarding Article 1F and identify challenges as well as needs and potential for cooperation to take steps forward.
Prior to her position at the MPD, Afke worked as a law clerk at the District Court of Amsterdam in the Criminal Law Section and the Aliens Law Sections.
