Logging in to Webpost Using FTP

When working at York, the most effective way to post and maintain your WWW documents is to login as a Novell user using a PC or Macintosh. If you have Internet access using York's high-speed modem pool, you can also access your files using FTP (File Transfer Protocol). You should be able to use any FTP utility. Popular programs include WS-FTP and Rapid File for Windows, and Fetch for the Macintosh. A command-line FTP utility is also available to most Unix and Vax users.

Regardless of which FTP program you use, you will need to know the following information:

FTP Host: webpost.yorku.ca
UserID: Your Webpost username. eg. "guest1"
Password: This was assigned when your Webpost account was created.
User Directory:
After logging in to WEBPOST, you will be logged into the HOME directory. From here, you can navigate to your user directory by clicking on ADMIN, FACULTY, COLLEGE or ORG as is appropriate.

If your FTP program allows you to specify a remote host path, you can use one of the following (where USER-ID is the WEBPOST username that was assigned to you).

Account type Remote (webpost) host path
Administrative accounts: /sys/home/admin/USER-ID
Colleges: /sys/home/college/USER-ID
Faculty member accounts: /sys/home/faculty/academic/USER-ID
Other York Organizations: /sys/home/org/USER-ID

Here is a typical login using WS-FTP:

  • Run the WS-FTP Program and click on the Connect button. When the Connect dialog appears, fill in the following fields as shown below:

  • If you have entered the path to your user directory, the program will display any files in your remote Webpost directory.

Next Steps

You have now logged into the Webpost server via FTP. Use the Left and Right buttons to transfer files to and from your Webpost account. WS-FTP also includes buttons for managing directories, deleting files, etc.

If you maintain all of your WWW files using ftp, it is a good idea to "mirror" your Webpost account file and directory structure on your local computer. You will edit and create all new files locally and then transfer them into the corresponding directory on your Webpost account.
