University Partnerships in Cooperation and Development Program
The overall objective of this program is to increase, in a sustainable manner, the capacity of developing countries to educate and train the human resources required to meet their priority development needs. The program is divided into two components: Tier I for larger multi-year projects; and Tier II for smaller, more narrowly defined projects. Tier I, up to $5 million over five years, is administered by the Canadian International Development Agency. Tier II, up to $750,000 over five years, is adminstered by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.
Deadlines: Applicants must submit draft proposals to ORA by January 31 for Tier I, and February 15 for Tier II. Full applications are due August 1999 and May 17, respectively.
MacArthur Foundation
Program on Global Security and Sustainability
The MacArthur Foundation offers research and writing grants to support innovation and excellence in the analysis of the causes, nature, and consequences of international conflict and cooperation and in the development of improved understanding of human security. Grants are valued at up to $100,000 for 18 months.

Multiculturalism Program
This program supports research which contributes to the understanding of diversity issues. The program is especially interested in research which strives to fill gaps in Canadians' understanding of three broad areas: (1) Social Justice; (2) Civic Participation; and (3) Identity.

Canadian Bureau for International Education
CIDA Awards Program for Canadians
The CIDA Awards Program for Canadians supports individuals with professional experience who wish to undertake a volunteer research or work project in international development, in collaboration with partners in developing countries. The award is valued up to $10,000 over twelve months.

Health Canada
National Health Research and Development Program
NHRDP supports health research projects that are original or secondary analysis, whose objectives and hypotheses contribute to the health policy mandate of Health Canada and the provinces/territories. Specific themes and topics vary from year to year. This year's themes are: Renewal and Restructuring of the Health System; Determinants of Population Health; Health Impact of Public Policies; and Transfer and Uptake of Knowledge. Grants are usually given for up to four years.

Applications for external sources of funding (i.e., outside York) must be submitted to ORA before forwarding them to the agencies. To assist in meeting these deadlines, it is recommended that applications be submitted to ORA one to two weeks prior to the deadline dates.
