The Administration shall offer, on a competitive basis, up to four Research Development Fellowships from a fund consisting of the equivalent of twelve course directorships. Deadline: Nov. 1 to Dean's Office for ranking; Nov. 15 to ORA. SSHRC Major Collaborative Research Initiatives SSHRC provides support for major collaborative research initiatives of up to $2.5 million over five years with the objective of strengthening Canadian research capacity in the social sciences and humanities, with emphasis on promoting high quality research and training in a collaborative environment. The specific objectives of the program are to: * promote collaborative research (including research networks), that meets international standards of excellence, as a central mode of research activity in the social sciences and humanities; * provide opportunities for training students and young researchers in a collaborative research environment; * strengthen collaborative research activity in the social sciences and humanities both within and between disciplines, increase collaboration with the other sciences, and promote the development of partnerships between universities and private and public sector groups; * foster unique opportunities to collaborate in international research activities involving many research interests and agencies; and * involve postsecondary institutions in long-term commitments for the development of unique large-scale research initiatives. Deadline: Nov. 15 draft letters of intent must be submitted to ORA; Jan. 17 to SSHRC. Sabbatical Leave Fellowship These funds are to provide sabbaticants with assistance in covering direct research costs associated with a program of work. Costs can include employment of research assistants, photocopying, computer equipment, books, stationery, films and tapes, local and non-local travel. Applicants going on sabbatical in 2000-2001, may request up to 10 per cent of academic base salary to a maximum of $10,000 on any one grant. Deadline: Jan. 15.

Applications for external sources of funding (i.e., outside York) must be submitted to ORA before forwarding them to the agencies. To assist in meeting these deadlines, it is recommended that applications be submitted to ORA one to two weeks prior to the deadline dates.
