Applied Research in Interactive Media Program CANARIE has made available a total of $6 million to support research and applications development in the area of interactive media. It will assist businesses, academic and research institutions, and arts and cultural organizations in performing research and developing innovative applications for broadband digital networks and other digital delivery platforms. Deadline: Jan. 30 to submit "Expressions of Intent"; full proposals due March 22 Association of Universities & Colleges of Canada Canada-Latin America and the Caribbean: Research Exchange Grants AUCC has made available up to $5,000 (cost-shared on a 2:1 ratio by the program and the partner institutions) to support collaborative research activities which will contribute to the creation, dissemination and sustained application of knowledge for the development process in at least one of the following areas: food security, equity in natural resource use, biodiversity conservation, sustainable employment, strategies and policies for healthy societies, information and communication, and gender. The overall purpose of this program is to strengthen international partnerships and consolidate emerging networks among academic researchers from Canada and Latin America. Activities should range from three weeks to four months. Deadline: Feb. 8 SSHRC Federalism and Federations Program This strategic joint initiative with Intergovernmental Affairs is intended to further our understanding of federalism and of the relationship between federalism and public policy, including the impact of the federal system on the development and implementation of policy in sectors characterized by significant interdependence between different levels of government. It may be useful here to compare sectors that have been exposed in varying degrees to international policy-making and the pressures associated with such exposure. The program provides research grants (up to $20,000) and conference support (up to $10,000). Deadline: Feb. 1 National Cancer Institute Novel Technologies for Noninvasive Detection, Diagnosis and Treatment of Cancer NCI is making available up to $50,000 to develop technology systems or systems components that will enable the sensing of defined signatures of different cancerous and precancerous cell types or their associated micro-environment in the body in a way that is highly sensitive and specific, yet non-intrusive. The highest priority is for systems that can either support or provide a seamless interface between sensing/ detection and intervention (treatment, prevention). Deadline: Feb. 6
