Networks of Centres of Excellence

Approximately $12 million per year will be available to support two or three networks whose mandate will be to develop innovative research approaches crossing traditional disciplinary and sectoral boundaries. Specifically, the NCE program invests in national research networks that will: stimulate internationally competitive leading-edge fundamental and applied research in areas critical to Canadian economic and social development; develop and retain world-class researchers in areas essential to Canada's productivity and economic growth; - create nation-wide multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral research partnerships that integrate the research and development priorities of all participants; and accelerate the exchange of research results within the network and the use of this knowledge within Canada by organizations that can harness it for Canadian economic and social development. Each network will be funded initially for seven years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional seven years.

Deadline: July 12 to submit letters of intent.

Since some university commitment may be involved, potential applicants are requested to inform ORA of their possible intent to apply by no later than Feb. 28.

Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC)

University Partnerships in Cooperation and Development Program (UPCDP)
Tier 1

The objective of the UPCDP is to increase, in a sustainable manner, the capacity of developing countries to educate and train the human resources required to meet their priority development needs. To this end, the UPCDP will support, on the basis of merit, projects and programs proposed by Canadian universities, in collaboration with developing countries which help to produce this impact by achieving the following outcomes: the strengthening of developing country institutions responsible for the training of human resources; the establishment of linkages fostering sustainable partnerships between Canadian universities and developing country institutions; the internationalization of Canadian universities in all aspects of their mission and the promotion of Canadian university expertise in higher education; and the development education of Canadian universities and the community they serve. The funding level is $5 million over five years.

Deadline: July 8 to submit letter of intent

Since only one letter of intent may be submitted from each institution, an internal selection process is being drafted which will entail an internal deadline to submit draft proposals well in advance of July 8.

SSHRC

Initiative on the New Economy

The INE supports both academic and community researchers who wish to investigate priority issues dealing with the New Economy. All projects that are submitted under this Initiative are required to investigate issues surrounding one of the following four themes: 1. General Issues Relevant to the New Economy; 2. Management and Entrepreneurship; 3. Education; and 4. Lifelong Learning. There are five components under this new program, two of which have an upcoming deadline of March 22: Development Grants (to provide immediate start-up funding for individual researchers or teams of researchers to develop, refine or extend research agendas and to lay the foundations for effective research partnerships) and Outreach Grants (to support innovative and effective public outreach, dissemination and knowledge transfer activities).

Deadline: March 22

The other three components of this program (Research Grants, Collaborative Research Initiatives, and Outreach Grants) have deadlines later in 2002.
