Research projects will focus on one or both of the following themes: trends in funding, performance and management of R&D; and policy options to stimulate R&D in and for developing countries. The value of the grant is up to $80,000 (or $160,000 for joint proposals). The duration is between 12 and 18 months. Deadline: March 29 Protein Engineering Network of Centres of Excellence (PENCE) Support Chairs for Protein Sciences Research Up to $100,000/year for three years is available to support Chairs that will promote scientific research excellence in the field of protein sciences. This is intended to assist universities in the recruitment of new academic researchers working in this area. This program is geared towards helping universities in the hiring of top quality candidates into research Chairs, such as the CRC Chairs. However, applications for candidates filling standard academic positions will also be considered. Deadline: April 1 NSERC Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering Nominations are being sought to award an individual who has made outstanding and sustained contributions to Canadian research in the natural sciences and engineering. It is awarded for accomplishments carried out in Canada and achieved over a substantial period of time. The Gold Medal will be awarded for any activity of exceptional importance and impact that leads to the enhancement of the research enterprise in Canada. The value of the award is $1,000,000 over a five-year period. Deadline: April 15 NSERC Michael Smith Awards for Science Promotion This award is intended to honour individuals and organizations who make an outstanding contribution to the promotion of science in Canada, through activities encouraging popular interest or developing science abilities. The value of the award is $5,000 for individuals, or $10,000 for organizations. Deadline: April 1
