A York University-wide fund has been established to make the York community (at both the Keele and Glendon campuses) more accessible to persons with disabilities. Assistive technology is defined as any piece of equipment of item that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. Find out what kinds of assistive technologies are available.
If you feel that you have been discriminated against you can discuss your concerns with this office. We are impartial advisors, educators, investigators, mediators and problem-solvers. Our mandate is to resolve concerns and complaints about allegations of discrimination and/or harassment as defined by the Ontario Human Rights Code and York’s human rights policies. We provide a range of services, including personal counselling, group development workshops, learning skills training, support and academic accommodation for students with learning, mental health, physical, sensory and medical disabilities. Counselling & Disability Services website.
Provides you with access to a computer account and printing, assistive technology software and training, computers with assistive technology and space for “strategy tutoring” on a fee-for-service basis. Assistive Technology Lab website.
York University has partnered with the Council of Ontario Universities (COU) to develop and launch the Educator’s Accessibility Resource Tool Kit. York has provided associate deans, departmental chairs and graduate program directors with training on the use of the tool kit. The tip sheets are located on the Teaching Commons website. They cover the following areas:
- Introduction to accessible education
- Creating accessible lectures
- Developing courses
- Writing a course syllabus
- Using Word documents and/or PDFs
- Using PowerPoint
- Evaluating students and giving feedback
The Office of Emergency Preparedness at York University is responsible for all aspects of emergency planning and preparedness at both our Keele and Glendon campuses. This office provides personal emergency preparedness planning for people with disabilities. York must provide notice to the public of any disruption in facilities or services used in particular by persons with disabilities (“Service Disruptions”). Service Disruptions may arise as a result of unscheduled or scheduled maintenance, repairs, construction and/or unforeseen causes. The Faculty Resource Guide for Teaching Students with Disabilities is designed to assist course instructors in supporting students with disabilities in their courses.

Everyone who interacts with the public on York University’s behalf is required to complete the AODA Accessible Customer Service eLearning course via YU Learn, our employee Learning Management System. Managers must ensure that members of the University complete this training.
