(Re)-Creating Asynchronous, Interactive Lecture Modules for the Principles of Economics Course

Description

We radically transformed our principles courses (Econ 1000/1010) from conventional multi-section, large-lecture, passive-learning format with high drop/failure rates, to a single meta-course for all 3000+ students that exploits economies of scale for a richer, more flexible, engaging, student experience. The foundation of the blended, meta-course format is a set of asynchronous lecture videos and interactive modules that are viewed by all students, ensuring a consistent, quality experience.

Individual section instructors use the time saved from lecturing, and from centralized administrative functions, to divide each section into 3 smaller groups, leading a one-hour, synchronous, active-learning focused, weekly tutorial for each group, something that was previously impossible. Student and faculty feedback has been positive, retention and attendance rates improved significantly, and we have made major progress in reducing academic dishonesty. This project will create a new set of high-production-value lecture videos and interactive modules, to ensure a continued, high-quality student learning experience.
