John Tory and Bonnie Crombie lead the pack of victorious York alumni in Oct. 27 municipal elections

Southwestern Ontario’s Oct. 27 municipal elections proved to be a big night for York University grads across the board. With showdowns happening across the Toronto, York, Durham, Hamilton/Peel/Halton and Niagara regions, a total of 15 York alumni ended up victorious in a number of positions.

Leading the pack of victorious York grads was Toronto mayor-elect John Tory (LLB ’98) and Mississauga mayor-elect Bonnie Crombie (MBA ’92).

“We are extremely proud that our new Mayor is an esteemed alumnus of York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School,” says Mamdouh Shoukri, President and Vice-Chancellor of York University. “We look forward to working with John and all members of City Council to advance matters of importance to our University community, including job creation, access to safe, affordable housing and a comprehensive transportation system.”

Tory, who takes over for Rob Ford, graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in 1978, and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1980. In 2003, he was the recipient of a Bryden Alumni Award, in the Achievement Category. With this appointment, Tory joins three other Osgoode graduates who have served as Mayor of Toronto: Nathan Phillips (’13), Philip Givens (’49) and Barbara Hall (’78).

Bonnie Crombie (MBA ’92), Mississauga mayor-elect

Crombie, who has previously served as a federal Liberal MP and a Mississauga city councilor, will replace Hazel McCallion after more than 36 years in office.

“The key was her platform. She consulted people first. She got input from all the organizations. As my favourite saying goes: She did her homework! And it certainly paid off tonight,” McCallion told The Globe and Mail after the Oct. 27 election.

Tory and Crombie are joined by several other York alumni across Southwestern Ontario who were successfully elected on Oct. 27:
