Schulich School of Business celebrates 50 years of excellence

York University's Schulich School of Business marks a milestone anniversary in 2015-16, celebrating 50 years of developing leaders, pioneering new knowledge and shaping global management education.

To recognize half a century of accomplishments, Schulich will host a series of 50th anniversary events and special projects, with the tagline “Business Education Transformed,” to celebrate Schulich’s transformational role in shaping global business education over the past five decades.

Sponsors and patrons helping to support a year-long series of global events and new initiatives in honour of the school’s 50 years include: premier-level sponsors/patrons – TD Bank Group and Rob McEwen, CM (MBA ’78, Hon. LLD ’05); and executive-level sponsors/patrons – Bell, the Schulich Foundation and Cineplex Entertainment.

"In today's changing business environment, the world needs leaders with a global perspective and the ability to solve complex problems using creative and innovative thinking," said Bharat Masrani, a Schulich alumnus, group president and chief executive officer, TD Bank Group. "Schulich's track record of preparing leaders of today and tomorrow has earned it the reputation as one of the world's leading business schools. I wish them continued success for the next 50 years and beyond."

McEwen, a Schulich alumnus, chairman and chief owner of McEwen Mining, and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council, said he has always admired Schulich’s focus to be on the leading edge of management education.

“This anniversary is about celebrating the multitude of achievements and innovations of the school, and to be immersed and feel its momentum, strength and opportunity,” he said.

Several events have already taken place in the lead-up to the anniversary season, including alumni galas in Hong Kong and Beijing, China, student-led conferences featuring alumni from throughout the school’s five decades, as well as more than 15 special anniversary-themed global events.

“The Schulich School of Business is privileged to enjoy this tremendous support in honour of our 50th anniversary,” said Schulich Dean Dezsö J. Horváth. “I invite all of our alumni, faculty, staff, students, board members and friends to join the Schulich community as we celebrate a remarkable past and embark on an equally promising future.”

A selection of signature activities coming up include:

  • Schulich’s Alumni Recognition Awards Gala will honour the accomplishments of three exceptional business leaders on Oct. 29: Ron Mock (MBA '79), president and CEO of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan; Kishore Moorjani (BBA ’94, MBA '95), Asia head of Tactical Opportunities for the Blackstone Group; and Schuyler M. (Skip) Sigel, partner at Rosenzweig & Company and Schulich Executive-in-Residence.
  • A new brand promotion campaign about Schulich and its five decades of excellence will air in Cineplex theatres across the GTA.
  • A public awareness campaign around the “Business of Ideas,” with the Globe and Mail’sReport on Business magazine, will be launched in the "CEO of the Year" edition of the publication in December.
  • Schulich’s new website and a new online alumni community hub will be launched in the coming months.
  • In early 2016, Schulich will host 50th anniversary celebrations for the Global Alumni Network in New York and London, U.K.
  • A grand 50th Anniversary Gala will take place on May 27, 2016, at Toronto’s Four Seasons Hotel, featuring Seymour Schulich, O.C. (Hon. LLD ’03), as the keynote speaker.
  • CONNECT 2016, Schulich’s annual alumni forum, will take place on May 28 in Toronto.

Announcements of several new student-driven initiatives in honour of the school’s 50th  anniversary will occur over the next 12 months. The Schulich School of Business was founded in 1965.

To amplify the excitement of the 50th anniversary season, the school has launched a new microsite, schulich50.com, which chronicles the school’s first five decades and explores 50 years of alumni, student and faculty success stories.
