Start2Finish – 5km Running & Reading Challenge

Start2Finish’s mission is to break the cycle of child poverty by providing ongoing educational support to Canada’s at risk children throughout their school years, nurturing mind, body and social health so they are empowered to succeed and become role models for change.Volunteer at the Start2Finish 5K Running & Reading Challenge which marks the conclusion of the Running & Reading Club program for the year.

The run and reading challenge will be held at York University Keele campus, and will also commemorate Canada’s 150th birthday.

The race is coupled with a Jeopardy-style Reading Challenge, followed by an awards ceremony celebrating the children’s accomplishments complete with medals, trophies and prizes, as well as activities such as a fun zone, a reading zone, and lunch for all of the kids.

Welcome/Run:

Set – Up

Set up equipment in stadium at various stations. Direction will be provided by Start2Finish Team. Michelle will brief registration and welcome team

VOLUNTEER NEED: 20 people

Volunteer Tent:

Volunteers will direct event volunteers and Coaches into the stadium. Event volunteers can leave their personal items in “Team Room 1” designated for event volunteers only. One volunteer will hand out parking tickets if need at that time.

VOLUNTEER NEED: 2 people

Registration Tent and Welcome Team:

Greet schools as they arrive and direct one Club Director to the registration tent. The welcome team will direct the rest of the Club to go inside the stadium. Volunteers will give buses that are staying on site a bus pass and direct them to park in the Founder’s West Lot.

VOLUNTEER NEED: 6 people

The volunteers in the registration tent are to confirm the arrival of the Club by checking them off the school list, then a volunteer will hand the Club Director an envelope with their school’s name, which contains the race bibs and safety pins for the children, and garbage bag.

Course Marshalls:

Volunteers will be positioned along various points of the race route to ensure each participant is moving through the race safely.

VOLUNTEER NEED: 30 people

Post Run Nutrition:

After students across the finish line they will be given a bottle of water and directed outside of the track to receive post run food. Once the students receive their food they will be directed into the stands in their designated seating area.

VOLUNTEER NEED: 10 people

Activity Stations:

Lunch:

Volunteers will arrange the boxes of pizza, juice and fruit for Club leaders to pick up. Volunteers will also hand out freezes and cut the tops of each before handing out.

Inflatable Station:

There are four inflatable units that need supervision at all times while it is in use. Further instructions will be provided by Redline Promotions once they deliver the units. There will be two at each inflatable.

VOLUNTEER NEED: 8 people

Reading Challenge (Lassanode Building Lecture Hall “A”):

(Judges will confirm the correct answers for the team of students representing their club. Answer sheet will be provided. Two judges and one score keeper is needed)

VOLUNTEER NEED: 6 people

Final Reading Challenge:

Volunteers at each station will help students gather again on the stands. Volunteers will help with cheering in the stands. Volunteers from the reading challenge first round working in the Lassonde Building will assist with the Final Reading Challenge for judging.

Saturday, May 27th
From 8:00am – 2:30pm

TIME ACTIVITIES
8:00 – 9:00 Schools start to arrive Buses will drop off students and Coaches at the stadium on Ian MacDonald Blvd. One Director or Volunteer will go to the registration tent to pick up the race package which includes race bibs, garbage bag, and site map. While one representative is picking up the race package, event volunteers will direct schools to the designated area on the infield
Group warm up and Schools wait for race start
9:10 – 9:15 School called to start line by school alphabetically by Nick
9:15-9:30 Welcome from Brian; O Canada
RACE BEGINS
9:30 – 10:30 Complete 5km run and post-run nutrition
10:30 Last runners should be finished and proceeding with post-run nutrition
10:50-11:05 Brian to announce Top 5 standings of schools, and top male and female runners.
11:05-11:15 Silvia to announce – Each school rotates thru 4 stations, 20 min each with 5 min transition time (Nick to give 5min countdown). Children and Coaches transition to stations.
11:15 – 1:15 School rotate thru 4 stations, 20 min each with 5 min transition time (Nick to give 5min countdown)

3. Lunch- Roma Pizza/ Frozen treat
4. Reading Challenge first round (Lassonde Building)
1:15- 1:30 Gather in the stands for Reading Challenge FINALS
1:30-2:15 Reading Challenge FINALS
