Brief Bio

I am human geographer by training, and currently hold the position of Professor at the Faculty of Environmental Studies (FES), York University.  I am interested in the transdisciplinary application of ecosystem approaches and complexity science to environmental problems - problems which are associated with high levels of complexity and uncertainty, and in which decision stakes are high. Currently I am exploring adaptive ecosystem approaches to human health and well-being (ecohealth), and have active projects in low income communities (slums) in Chennai India, a biological corridor in southern Costa Rica, and the Credit Valley watershed in Southern Ontario, Canada (among others).

I have methodological expertise in geographic information systems, adaptive management, soft systems methodology and ecosystem approaches to environmental management. I dislike stating a particular academic 'pigeon hole' in which I roost, however, depending on the perspective one takes on the problem, my research interests could be seen as lying within the realm of community development, planning, environmental management, human ecology, international development, systems science, post-normal science, ecosystem management, geographic information systems (GIS) or environmental modelling.

I am currently Chair of the President's Sustainability Council at York University,  Director of the Spatial, Environmental and Action Research (SpEAR) Lab at FES, and Review Editor for the journal EcoHealth.  I am also Treasurer for the Network for Ecosystem Sustainability & Health (NESH), an NGO that develops and applies solutions to environment and health issues in agriculture, resource management and community development. I also like cats.
