Challenge Question
How can we combine linguistic, communication, and social contexts with machine learning to help people understand and improve their conversations?
Partner: Nascent
Project Summary
Communication lies at the heart of every human relationship. Our ability to communicate effectively has a tremendous impact on how we work and live together with friends, family, communities, and society. As people, we are communicating with each other all the time—often with little thought about how we communicate and even less training on how to communicate effectively. Today, technologies like AI, machine learning, and voice recognition create opportunities to increase awareness of how others might be perceiving our communication, provide tips and coaching on improving our communication skills, and offer insights into the feelings of the people we’re communicating with. Technology allows us to connect with people all over the world, but it also means that most of our communication is done through a screen and not face-to-face. With the language barriers inherent in this wider reach, and fewer opportunities to learn effective communication, we see a need to find a solution that helps people build relationships.
This project aims to harness voice to build better relationships, combining linguistic, communication, and social contexts with machine learning to help people understand and improve their conversations. A student team will create open-source code and concepts to design and build a user experience that leverages voice technology to process and analyze conversations in real time, providing insights and coaching to help users understand and improve their conversations. Participants in this project will work with technology like sentiment analysis, word marking, and voice analysis to create a mobile application. Students interested in this project might have background knowledge in UX/UI design, software engineering/computer science, business and entrepreneurship, communications and marketing, and psychology and behavioural science. Backgrounds in native mobile software development and consumption of cloud APIs are also beneficial. Some team members will need to have their own laptops and software tools for developing mobile applications (e.g. XCode for iOS or Android Studio) and necessary cloud PaaS (Platform as a Service) and IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) accounts for natural language processing and speech recognition.
