Challenge Question
How might we cultivate the civic literacy of post-secondary students so that they may be more meaningfully informed and actively engaged in societal politics?
Partner: Vote Better
Project Summary
Most higher education institutions lack the necessary infrastructure to support meaningful engagement from their student body when it comes to student campus politics. Symptoms of this problem include: Consistent low turnout in student government elections; Current campaign methods leave students feeling disconnected from their peers; No simple way exists to identify and respond to the needs of community members, and, there is limited awareness among the general student body regarding the structure, processes, and roles of student organizations on campus.
The research team for this challenge will explore ways to address the social issue of low engagement in student campus politics and the general disillusion with the democratic process by leveraging data-driven insights from academic literature and user research to create a peer-to-peer platform that addresses student capacity for democratic engagement. The intention of the project is to create a platform that is operational throughout the academic year, not just during the campus election period.
The research team may be comprised of individuals with interests or specializations in political science, public administration, computer engineering, computer science, digital media, communication & media studies, information technology, business, and marketing.
