Challenge Question
How can an EDI perspective be brought to a mentorship program?
Partner: Alumni Engagement
Project Summary
Mentors can change people’s perspectives and impact their futures. Many researchers have found a positive link between having a mentor and achieving academic and career success. Traditional mentoring programs have actively tried to leave personal identity outside of the mentoring relationship – aiming to be “gender neutral” or “color blind.” While well-intentioned, “identity-blind” mentoring may not be effective as mentoring relationships that acknowledge a shared identity. This challenge invites a research team to explore equality and equity in designing a mentoring program(s) that would be meaningful to University students and their alumni mentors. In doing so, the student team would strengthen a diversity-support community that would create supportive relationships that would fuel personal and professional success.
The research team for this project might be composed of individuals with an interest or specialization in equity, gender studies, Indigenous studies, Black studies, social work, sociology, urban studies, education, and psychology.
