Project 3

Challenge Question

How can AJM bounce back from COVID-19 school closure, by supporting student learning and mental health through volunteerism?

Partner: Anne J. MacArthur Public School

Project Summary

This challenge seeks a model to address both the gaps in student learning due to COVID-19-related school closures and the academic challenges students may face coming back to a new school year with continued restrictions on face-to-face learning. Volunteerism with a group of dedicated and educated individuals will support students both academically and emotionally to close these gaps. The goal of this project is to have a diverse research team develop strategies and resources to improve student experiences through a volunteer-based initiative. The social and emotional challenges that students may face in the new school year are as important as their academic gaps in learning, so applicants should come from a range of backgrounds, including education, the social sciences, community engagement and advocacy, and mental health, and be interested in supporting youth and improving student experience.
