Challenge Question
How can we offer tangible solutions to providing equitable access to education for all?
Partner: Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA)
Project Summary
The right to education is often the key that unlocks other rights - including the freedom of expression, the freedom of religion, and democratic, civil, political and legal rights. In Canada, the right to education is protected in provincial/territorial education acts and yet, unfortunately, not everyone has the same access to education, or the access is not equitable. For example, did you know that undocumented children can only attend school if they live in Ontario? During COVID-19, youth in detention centers only received 30 minutes to 1 hour of remote education everyday; and, Indigenous children living on reserves often are required to leave their families to come to urban centres or travel for hours to get to school. Often, it can take years for children with learning disabilities or special needs to get extra help in schools. How can these gaps be filled?
The research team for this project will work towards understanding issues related to access to education in Canada and then theorize creative ways to address these educational inequalities and obstacles with existing resources and realistic budgets. The research team may be composed of individuals with interests or specialization in: public administration, computer social work, equity studies, law, urban studies, history, economics, and education.
