Challenge Question
How might we integrate existing modes of transportation with a campus ridesharing system to reduce environmental footprint and cost?
Partner: YuRide
Project Summary
By sharing their ride to school, many York University students become pioneers in university ridesharing and sustainability by reducing the number of single-occupancy vehicles coming onto campus. YuRide’s mission is to establish, facilitate, and operate this service from the ground up while using the most innovative methods possible. Building on the success of last year’s C4 project, YuRide is looking for a research team to advance its understanding of its core market, refine the technologies developed for its initial suite of products, and find a creative way to incentivize and reward YuRide users. This project will explore strategies to attract more users to ridesharing and other sustainable ways of transportation and focus on ways to launch and scale this platform in the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. For this project YuRide would welcome students with diverse knowledge of environmental impact and sustainability, app/web development, marketing, community engagement, urban studies and public health and safety.

Organizational Profile
YuRide is a ridesharing platform established at York University to support access to multi-modal transportation systems for specific communities and campuses. We are passionate about innovation, sustainability, and York’s community, and we aim to raise awareness of transportation gaps and connect community members with accessible solutions to their transportation needs. By providing a solution tailored to a specific organization, we are answering market needs for community-centred transportation solutions that are both affordable and safe. YuRide’s past initiatives include decreasing the number of single-occupancy vehicles coming to York each day; enabling students to easily share their commute with unique integrations such as Passport York login and YU-card transactions; and the 2019-2020 C4 capstone project “GreenG0: A Rideshare Footprint Tracker,” which developed an app to engage rideshare users and bring attention to the environmental impact of ridesharing.
